USC’s Professional Writing Program became the first multidisciplinary program in the nation to offer a specialized Master’s Degree in Professional Writing, that prepares individuals for careers in writing in all genres. One of the oldest and most distinguished programs in the nation, the USC Professional Writing Program has a celebrated faculty and a strong curriculum in novel, film, TV, drama, poetry and nonfiction writing. Program faculty, drawn from nationally and internationally known writers, have included playwright William Inge, novelists William Goyen and Richard Yates, Academy Award-winning screenwriters Harry Brown and Edmund North, poets Ann Stanford and Yevgeny Yevtushenko, and feminist author Betty Friedan.
Actors who have participated in "USC One-Act Play Festival" productions have included Academy Award winner Kathy Bates, Academy Award nominee Paul Winfield, Tony Award nominees Orson Bean and Patricia Barry, Emmy Award nominees Cliff De Young, Jeff Corey, John Glover, Ron Pallilo, Nan Martin, Lawrence Pressman, Carole Cook, Sheree North, Penny Fuller, and Concetta Tomei, as well as Broadway directors James Sheldon, Jack Manning, John Bowab, Lorenzo De Stefano, Shelly Berman, Michael Ewing, and others.
